Ethics
ADAPT is an approach for moral decision-making. It this ethical philosophy stresses on choosing the right and moral conduct. Human beings limit their morality to interpersonal values such as offering help, staying courteous and respecting privacy. Moral reasoning offered by ADAPT include attention, dialogue, assumptions, proposal and test.
The application of ADAPT approach can be understood by considering the case where physician has to inject morphine for hastening death of the patient. His morality will convince him to consider reasoning before undergoing such procedure. He will first observe the patient’s condition and then enters in a dialogue with the family. It is moral responsibility to inform the patient and the family about the procedures of injecting fatal dose of morphine and the complications. The patient or the family can make a free decision only when they have complete knowledge of the morphine. The dialogues will allow the physician to explain the benefits and risks of the morphine.
The next step involves making assumptions about the case. As patient is about to die to the physician needs to make a decision that will result in best interest of the patient. the doctor will consider what he religion allow him and what forbids him. When the physician had made assumptions he will present a proposal to the family CITATION Lis132 \l 1033 (Newton, 2013). this will include two option: ‘giving the morphine injection’ or ‘letting patient die’. The proposal will allow family to make a free decision.
The doctor acts morally when he has informed the family about the patient’s situation and gives them the right to make a decision. Complete knowledge about the procedures of morphine injection and its complications will permit the family to take a free decision. The physician has fulfilled his ethical responsibility by choosing the right course of action.
