Quality control is abroad topic of discussion since it entails several issues. To begin with, quality control as defined by Alford and Beatty is that, it is a technique used by industries to achieve in the production of similar uniform good that are acceptable and have a good quality for the consumers. Quality control may also be defined as the steps in the manufacture of a commodity to achieve the production of quality goods. Therefore, quality control determines the steps that are to be taken in the inspection of a commodity to avoid the production of defective goods. This system ensures that the goods have some required specification such as the weight of the commodity, its strength, and the chemical contents in it and so on.
The main objective of the quality control system is to ensure a good standard of the manufactured items and the commodities at the best cost of production. The system also ensures that the standards that are produced are acceptable by the consumer and they are affordable to be maintained. The quality control system should also ensure that the quality of a product does not fall from its standards. Finally, their other objective is to ensure that accurate measures are taken to achieve their main goal.
Quality control usually an independent department in an organization. It is usually governed by a leader who may be the quality control engineer. The function of this engineer is to advise the companys management on the quality control policy formulation and also about the inspection or any modification about it. He also decides the inspection standards, writes down the departments operating expenses and he foresees all the activities done in the department. He also ensures that the equipment used for quality control are in good condition and are properly maintained.
The main purpose of quality control is to ensure that the goods produced are of good quality and that can suit the customers need. Therefore, quality control has several faces that a good should pass through before being released to the market for consumption. First is the organization that formulates the policy that governs the quality of the products that it produces. Secondly, is the phase of the quality of the product design, this is where the suggestion about the kind of materials to be used is suggested. The final and last phase is the management of distribution and the after-sale use, this is where the organization is interested in the feedback that comes from the consumers about the product.
Quality control may bring several advantages to an organization that implements the system in full capacity. First, it may lead to an increase in the volume of sales of the products because of the good quality. It may also help in the reduction of the inspection coast. Similarly, it may reduce the cost of manufacturing since it reduces the number of products that may be rejected hence leading to rework. This, therefore, reduces time wastage in production. Improvement of the consumer and the producer relationship.
Despite quality control being good for the production of commodities in an organization, some factors that affect its usage. This factors may include, the system needs a lot of capital for it to function where not may organizations may afford the capital required. The management policies may also be so high that quality control cannot achieve to produce. Similarly, the demands by the consumer about the quality may be so high for the organization to achieve. Finally, quality control may not achieve its standards because of human errors and failures.
