SUBJECT Factors impacting communication in the workplace
With the advancement in technology and globalization, the role of communication has become crucial in workplaces. Regardless of the size of the organization, communication plays a key role in impacting productivity. This article discusses the main key factors that impact communication in the workplaces, between the employees and employers. Lack of effective communication in the workplace can lead to the biggest disasters. Not just formal communication but informal communication is also really important in delivering the correct information and creating a positive work environment in the workplace.
Every time employees clash with one another on any agenda, or confusion generates between the employees, work suffers. It not just results in decreased productivity but also influences the stress and anxiety among the employees that results in increased rick of mistakes.
In order to tackle these issues, it is essential to cater the factors that impact the communication in an organization the most.
Personality Barriers among the different generations
Every organization has employees from different generations. These generations perceive communication differently due to generational change and personality differences.
Good communication reveals the shared values and common commitments. Generation of millennials expects close relationships and frequent feedback from their supervisors. They also want to know the important information that is only reserved with the superiors. Whereas the older generation considers this lack of seriousness and commitment. Communication attitude of the millennials is often resented by the bombers that dont like this informal way of communication and millennials need to know everything ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION citationIDxxyK1CbV,propertiesformattedCitation(Myers and Sadaghiani, 2010),plainCitation(Myers and Sadaghiani, 2010),noteIndex0,citationItemsid1608,urishttp//zotero.org/users/local/KZl8ZL3A/items/HJWZ5A2Z,urihttp//zotero.org/users/local/KZl8ZL3A/items/HJWZ5A2Z,itemDataid1608,typearticle-journal,titleMillennials in the Workplace A Communication Perspective on Millennials Organizational Relationships and Performance,container-titleJournal of Business and Psychology,page225-238,volume25,issue2,sourceSpringer Link, abstractStereotypes about Millennials, born between 1979 and 1994, depict them as self-centered, unmotivated, disrespectful, and disloyal, contributing to widespread concern about how communication with Millennials will affect organizations and how they will develop relationships with other organizational members. We review these purported characteristics, as well as Millennials more positive qualitiesthey work well in teams, are motivated to have an impact on their organizations, favor open and frequent communication with their supervisors, and are at ease with communication technologies. We discuss Millennials communicated values and expectations and their potential effect on coworkers, as well as how workplace interaction may change Millennials.,DOI10.1007/s10869-010-9172-7,ISSN1573-353X,shortTitleMillennials in the Workplace, journalAbbreviationJ Bus Psychol, languageen, authorfamilyMyers, givenKaren K.,familySadaghiani,givenKamyab,issueddate-parts2010,6,1,schemahttps//github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json (Myers and Sadaghiani, 2010).
In many workplaces, this personality difference can be neglected, and communication can be improved by opening dialogue between the generations to positively improve their communication.
Physical barriers
Removing the physical barriers in the way of communication is really important. For example, physical cubicles create a physical barrier between the employees and render the communication. Open spaces, provide more opportunities for the employees to interact and communicate with one another. If the location of the supervisors location is at a distance, it will result in communication reduction in the employees. People who are physically collocated are more likely to communicate frequently and informally ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION citationID84022Ocs,propertiesformattedCitation(Whittaker et al., 1994),plainCitation(Whittaker et al., 1994),noteIndex0,citationItemsid1606,urishttp//zotero.org/users/local/KZl8ZL3A/items/AFQGCN99,urihttp//zotero.org/users/local/KZl8ZL3A/items/AFQGCN99,itemDataid1606,typepaper-conference,titleInformal workplace communication what is it like and how might we support it,container-titleConference companion on Human factors in computing systems - CHI 94,publisherACM Press,publisher-placeBoston, Massachusetts, United States,page208,sourceCrossref,eventConference companion,event-placeBoston, Massachusetts, United States, abstractWe present new findings about the nature of informat communications, derived from a naturalistic study of peoples everyday working activities. Implementing the open door policy and reducing the physical barriers, motivates subordinates and co-workers to communicate and interact more freely.
Cultural barriers
With globalization, many organizations have employees who belong to the different cultural backgrounds, which often poses a communication challenge. Vocabulary issues, context misunderstandings and the difference in cultural norms deeply affects the communication. Cross-cultural communication barriers such as anxiety, uncertainty, stereotyping, and ethnocentrism are caused by inadequate cultural knowledge and the lack of intercultural communicative skills ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION citationIDBve2adSV,propertiesformattedCitation(Jenifer, 2015),plainCitation(Jenifer, 2015),noteIndex0,citationItemsid1603,urishttp//zotero.org/users/local/KZl8ZL3A/items/Z27TV5XB,urihttp//zotero.org/users/local/KZl8ZL3A/items/Z27TV5XB,itemDataid1603,typearticle-journal,titleCROSS CULTURAL COMMUNICATION BARRIERS IN WORKPLACE,page4,volume6,issue1,sourceZotero,languageen,authorfamilyJenifer,givenR Delecta,issueddate-parts2015,schemahttps//github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json (Jenifer, 2015).
