Week 3 Research Summary
The author Marion Good in her article explains the middle age theory of “balance between analgesia and side effects to manage acute pain”. It serves as an outline for all the nurses to effectively structure and devise a pain management plan that can facilitate patients. The main aim of this pain management plan is to devise an effective pain control method that can also help in reducing the side effects of pain medications. The author also proposed some interventions that can help patients with acute pain to manage their pain efficiently (Good, 2004). The first intervention is a multimodal intervention. According to this intervention, to achieve good pain regulators with fewer side effects can be done by utilizing pain medications with adjunctive pharmacological, and non-pharmacological methods. The second intervention proposed was attentive care in which regular evaluation is required to examine the side effects, and in case the medicines are not working then a new plan can be devised on time. The third intervention proposed was patient participation Good, M. (2004). According to this intervention, the awareness regarding acute pain management should be provided to the patient that can encourage them in setting their goals for their pain management. All the interventions present above were based on several examinations of the previous research conducted on the pain management topic. This theory permits nurses to create a hypothesis regarding pain management that can be tested, and interpreted into practice guidelines. Although the intervention provided in the article can help a lot in devising an effective pain management plan, yet it has some limitations as well. With the introduction of sensory components of pain management, the theory does provide a framework for treating acute pain only. The article lacks in proposing pain management interventions for the patients having a chronic illness (Good, 2004).
