Introduction
The United States of America is 243 years old; it is a nation made up of more than 330 million people that belong to various fields of life. The increasing diversity of the country and along with the polarized politics, challenges the people of America to imagine and think that what a modern American civic society would mean. The concept of social and political engagement is gaining immense popularity in current times. The reason behind growing popularity of this concept is progress and growth in technology and the increase in diversity. The engagement of citizens is not deemed necessary in most of the matters (Theiss-Morse, & Hibbing, 2005). The following paper will look into the details of the concept of social and political engagement and why it is necessary to become an engaged citizen in the light of articles written by experts.
Discussion
Political and social engagement is a concept that has become much prevalent in the current years. An engaged citizen is considered an active citizen. Engaged citizenship is a concept that refers to the active participation of the members of a sovereign nation under its law in the discussion and education of the political, social, and economic scenarios going on around them. Social capital plays a very important role in engagement citizenship (Baron, Field, & Schuller, 2000). Social capital refers to the network of relationships and social bindings, who live and work together in a society and share resources with each other. Social capital or network is very much necessary for every society for its proper functioning and prosperity.
According to the articles under discussion, the authors have debated what exactly are the roles of an engaged citizen. The authors explain that upon which grounds a citizen should be categorized as an engaged citizen or not. The first and foremost indication of an engaged citizen is that such citizens play an important role in the decision-making, discussions, and deliberations. An engaged citizen also participates in the implementation and application of these decisions in the important projects and programs affecting the whole community.
It has become extremely important to remain engaged in the citizenship process. Engaged citizens are considered active, assertive, and independent. Moreover, they are considered more reliable, and other people in the community look towards them in times of need. An engaged citizen is much more educated and aware as compared to an unengaged citizen, which is why he or she can provide much better and effective solutions to different kinds of problems as compared to a less engaged citizen.
