Types of Needs
The normative need arises when a deficiency is felt by an individual or a group and they fail to meet the expectation or some established norm. For instance, a homeless person attending a job fair on the recommendation of the social worker assigned and realizes that he or she fails to meet certain requirements. What people want, when they put that into action, expressed needs arise (Marosszeky, Rix, & Owen, 2006). In this way, a necessity felt earlier becomes expressed need or the demand to fulfill that necessity. For example, the majority of the homeless population showed up for bed at the homeless shelter, more than the bed space they are having. Perceived need is when an individual or a group needs to do something to achieve an objective or a goal. For instance, a homeless person needs medicine, the mean could be to get some medicine from social service or shelter-based clinic or stealing it.
Relative needs are different from absolute needs that are the same for everyone in the population, relative needs are according to one’s own income, cost, circumstances or norms. For instance, in the homeless population, those whose basic health care needs are met would be interested in taking health service, those whose basic needs are not met would not be interested in service. Designing a program based on need assessment of the homeless population is essential to ensure the effectiveness of the program. It is reasonable to say that people in a homeless population may have varied needs. A program that only targets one type of need is effective if the majority of the population is having similar needs. On the other hand, a program addressing a variety of needs is more effective if it covers all the needs highlighted by need assessment program.
