The Jewish War Midterm
Introduction:
This argumentative essay is about the war between Jewish and Roman. It is claimed that the Jewish population rebelled against the Roman rule. It is one side of the story as many historians argue that it was Jews who created the disturbance. In order to take the land where, they had their own rules and regulation. Roman empire got power over the land and also on the Jewish, which develop the hatred in the Jewish family for the Roman emperor due to the number of reasons. The purpose of the paper is to explain and identify the number of factors which lead the Jewish population to rebel against Roman rule. The Jewish did not fight for power or land; they became rebellion to save their laws and rituals.
Discussion:
When Archelaus had become a Roman province, Antipas administered their own tetrarchies. When the Roman empire transferred to Tiberius, and upon the death of the Augustus, Philips and Herod both continued to hold power. They both later built the cities, one in the region of Paneas and other in Lower Gailanitis. The name of the cities were Jordan and Julias respectively. The city Judaea had a large number of population of Jewish in it. The pilate, new ruler set his power in the city by sending his governor in the city. Jewish were the people who denied the power of human; they only believed in the power and order of God. It was difficult for them to show or obey the emperor.
During the rule of Auguste and under his administration, number of Galilean also known as Judas encouraged the Jewish to revolt by saying that these people will be coward if they accept the power and would pay tribute to the Romans. They say it will be their cowardness if they consider a man as a lord after God. It made the Jewish as a rebellion of Roman rule because it was against their believes and faith. This is because there are three sects of Jews that is Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes. These three sects are different in the belief from different aspect, but all three sects believe that there is the power of God only. Men are created to spend their life for God. No human can be able to create his power over the people. The sect Essenes were the Jewish by birth which showed high attraction for each other than other two sects. These are the people who reject the pleasure as a vice; they did not get married and were spending their life over the passions to be a virtue (Josephus,58). Therefore when Auguste sent his governer into the city, these Jewish people did not agree to accept the power of the Roman ruler.
The first rejection of Roman rule was set by the Jewish when Pilate sent the images of Ceasar known as "standards" into the city and ordered to put that images in the temple of the Jews. This act set the great uproar by the Jews as they felt that their laws were trodden under foot through the action. According to the law of Jewish, to show their piety towards God, they did not talk about anything related to the world. They did not say a word about a personal matter or any worldly issue. They prayed to God and took his name till the sunrise received from their forefather. Therefore, it was against their law that image of the man to be put into the temple and they have to pray or show their piety to the image instead of God (Josephus, 59).
After trying to put standards in the temple and murdered the number of Jews who rejected it, Pilate created a disturbance by increasing the sacred treasure, known as Corban on an aqueduct. When he came to Jerusalem, he would mixed his soldiers with the jews by providing them dress of private men. These soldier, without using sword, created the disturbance in the city by beating the jews with their staves. He forced Jewish to show piety for him and those who rejected were killed. The strategy was useful for the Pilate as according to the Jewish law wore linen garments when wet out for labor. They did not buy new cloth or shoes until the present ones were torn to pieces entirely (Josephus, 59). This law made it easy for pilate to mix his soldier among the Jews. Jews could not find that soldiers were mixed their population, and it became difficult to them because the new people who used to make their mind for coming into their sect were provided the same white garments for wearing, but they were not allowed to sit or participate with them. It took more than two years to join their sects and people (Josephus,59). This was the law through which pilate successfully created the disturbance.
Gaius Caesar abused the fortuned when he went to the Jerulism and took himself to be a God. The forcing strategy over Jewish to obey him as a God made the situation worse in the city. As per Jewish law, all men of the sect were considered as equal. The property they had were considered as common for the whole community. There was no appearance of poverty or an excess of riches. They all listened to the master and fulfilled his order (Josephus,58). Therefore, they rejected the demand of the Gaius Caesar to accept him as a God. After the rejection of Jewish, Gaius assembled the Jewish along with their children and wives and ordered his army to torture them until they disobeyed their law and considered him a God.
Roman ruler developed disturbance through two more strategies. Firstly, he sprand up robbers in Jerusalem, and they slew men especially during the festivals. The first man slain by the robbers was a high priest named "Jonathan." It developed the fear among Jewish as priests were the one who offered prayer and many of them predicted the things to come by reading the holy book and by using different sorts of Purification (Josephus, 61). The murder or priest made the situation worst, lost Jewish trust over the fellow men as coward use their appearance for the robbery. Also, the Roman ruler mixed the Syrian people with the population of the Jewish. Where Jewish were not allowed to eat or touch people of other sects, they considered them as a foreigner (Josephus,59). If someone touched them, Jewish had to purify themselves; that is why when Syrian people started living with them. Jewish saw difficulties following their laws and rituals. All these disturbances created by the Roman rulers forced the Jewish population to rebel against Roman rule.
Conclusion:
The Jewish War in 67 AD was not the war for power or land, and it was the war to get back their access to obey their God according to their laws and rituals. Roman ruler tried to impose their power on the Jewish by damaging their religion by forcing them to do unlawful actions. Roman rulers wanted Jewish to obey him as a God. On rejection, the disturbance was created. Disturbance on different occasion developed the hatred and felling of rebel in the heart of Jewish, which at last became the reason for war.
