The Dangers of Speeding
Speeding is a type of aggressive driving behavior in which the driver crosses a certain speed limit that may risk lives. It is a thrill mostly enjoyed by youngsters but it may kill. Different factors contribute to speeding i.e. traffic, running late, disregard of law and anonymity, etc. Speeding must be discouraged.
History of Speeding
Taking a look at the history of speeding, it 19the century for the first time speed limits were established for reducing the chances of traffic incidents and increasing safety from motor collision. For years, before the establishment of speed limit, each state was responsible for determining its speed limit laws. Congress established a national maximum speed limit of 55mph, right after the oil shortage. The New York legislature states, each city shall place conspicuously main highway where a change in speed rate would be illuminated adequately between sunrise and sunset. By the late 1920s, adoption of the signs became more prominent in which many designs were included and many of these could be seen currently regarding guiding people about speeding. In order to discourage speeding, signs with different shapes were invented on which the numerical speed limit was written, for the driver, beyond which, the driver would be charged. For guiding drivers about their speed so that they could avoid speeding, rectangular signs were introduced for the first time in history and were used for benefitting the driver.
Why Is Speeding Dangerous and how it does affect others
Speeding is dangerous as vehicles respond more quickly to acceleration and slowly to brakes due to which chances of road accidents increase. Speeding is dangerous for many reasons; it makes the driver lose control of the vehicle. Speeding increases the risk of a crash. Speeding is, accelerating a vehicle beyond a defined limit which may cause financial penalties. A driver may damage his vehicle or may be traffic police charge while measuring through camera. Speeding is dangerous as it carries a high risk of death. Another aspect of speeding being dangerous is the environmental aspect as it affects environment by causing various negative impacts on it. Vehicle noise, vibration, and emission are dangerous for the environment which when gets polluted, affects both human and animal health. Also, there is a danger of losing a license as speeding of the vehicle would earn negative points on a driver’s license, which may get suspended eventually. Speeding is also dangerous as it makes the driver a criminal who starts breaking laws that were actually made for protecting them and other citizens from accident risks.
One of the most threatening facts regarding speeding is that it puts many lives at risk. According to Bradley and co-workers, exceeding of the speed limit could prove most dreadful not only for the drivers but also for other passengers and road users. Speeding may prove dangerous for others as it may not only risk their lives but also cause injuries that stay with them forever (Bradley et al.). Speeding is not only dangerous for the driver but also serves as a threat for those who do not even use any vehicles. Speeding is bad for others as it may crippled them for life due to which sometimes whole family suffers.
Another important aspect of noticing the dangers of speeding is that it not only affects people by increasing the risk of the crash but also affects the insurance companies in a broader view (Abdelsalam, Mohamed, & Bonny). Insured people when got injury or die in accidents due to speeding, insurance go through a loss of millions. Insurances have to manage all the expenses of treatment in both cases whether it’s injury or death. Speeding could prove dangerous for people as they may not only lose their lives but at the same time, they may suffer from financial loss as it has been witnessed that due to speeding of the vehicles, many public as well as private properties are destroyed (Daniel). In cases, where the crash happens because of driver's speeding, private property is damaged for which the owner suffers a financial loss. This financial loss is not paid all the time so in cases when owners are not paid for their loss, they are affected financially.
So as a whole, it could be concluded that due to the speeding of the driver, vehicles get out of control. Getting out of control is not only damaging for the drivers but also for others who may not be travelling in any vehicle (pedestrians). For example, speeding would cause people to suffer from physical as well as financial loss. In most cases, it has been seen that people who drive at high speed, not only causes problems for themselves but also put many other lives at risk. So speeding must be avoided as it does not benefit anyone rather it causes destruction, not only for the driver but equally for the others who may be walking or just be passengers. Speeding must be avoided and traffic rules should be followed so that more lives can be saved and risk of accidents could be minimized.
