Statement of Purpose

The average life expectancy of a person has increased by 30 years. The advances in the healthcare field and prevention of disease are no doubt credited because of public health. Public health is a profession that focuses on the prevention and anticipation of diseases and the overall improvement and advancement of human life. I have been interested in this field because a public health professional is an expert on human biological systems, health policy, and epidemiology. I always wanted to work in organizational administrative positions to make policies and approaches that can effectively address the health-related issues of the communities. I have a desire to improve the healthcare system as I believe working in the administration would enable me to design such plans and strategies that can significantly influence current health practices. For example, tobacco use can be effectively reduced by implementing policies to prohibit smoking at workplaces, colleges, and schools. I also have an opinion which was highly admired in my school as I have proposed an idea for my school cafeteria. I suggested them to provide only organic food to the students and should discourage junk food availability to reduce teenage obesity and obesity-related disease from communities.

A person seeking a career in the public health field should have a basic degree in public health then a master’s in public health. Bachelor's degree is the minimum prerequisite to work in the field of public health. A person expert in public health would be able to understand the statistical trends of medical and clinical data to identify the disease patterns. The person would be an expert in epidemiology which enables him to understand the basics of illnesses and its origin and transmission methods to effectively control its propagation in the communities. The United States needs experts of public health for its healthcare systems such as current operations, evidence-based research, future trends, and medical policies to effectively address the issues of healthcare organizations. Many schools of public health have raised the concept of improved lifestyle through education and awareness. I believe that through education and awareness we can change the lifestyle and trends of diseases from communities. Public health is a diverse field that focuses on epidemiology, public relations, health education, health informatics, disease management, prevention of diseases, and management of healthcare systems.

Academically, a person needs to understand the healthcare systems, community services, health education and interventional studies to work in public health. Associate degrees and bachelor's degree are offered by many schools of public health; however, for a person to become expert in the particular field, they need to have masters and doctoral degree in public health. Public health professionals know health disparities, knowledge of cultural and environmental factors that may influence the health of communities. Also, they are professionally good in inferential and descriptive statistics to identify medical data relevancy and validity. Public health professionals should know the knowledge of nutrition and diet as these factors are directly linked with the health of people. Professionally, a public health expert should be familiar with common nutrition diseases and the impact of diet on the development of children.

I would join as a community health specialist or public health policymaker to improve the health of communities after getting higher education in public health. Public health specialists would enable many nurses and community workers to get training to make people aware of health problems. Therefore, after getting a degree in Masters in public health from APUS, I would be able to work actively in the field. This is a renowned university working in the enhancement of knowledge of students through excellence in research, teaching, and practice. The university is dedicated to providing the best education to empower students by making them a capable public health leader for the future.
