Response to Shawn
Dear Shawn, after reading your discussion post, I must say that you did a commendable job in explaining the role of clinical informatics in healthcare. Specifically, I liked how you provided an outline of the discussion in the introductory paragraph. This facilitates a reader in getting to know about what topic will be discussed in the coming paragraphs.
Technology has become an indispensable part of our lives, and therefore, it is necessary to incorporate technology in healthcare settings as well. As you mentioned in your post that clinical informatics can facilitate a lot in improving patient care, several studies have also highlighted the significance of using clinical informatics as well. For, instance research published by the author Allan F. Simpao (Simpao & Rehman, 2014) also discussed the importance of clinical information in decision making. According to the author, a systematic utilization of data when combined with both the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the information can facilitate a lot in making timely decisions regarding patient health. This will, in turn, improve patient safety.
As you shared your experience regarding the use of clinical informatics, I would also like to add that in the hospital where I worked as an internee also implemented clinical informatics to reduce the patients fall (Teigland & Byrne, 2005). The hospital administration designed a system in which they record all the incidents of the patients' falls while also recording the potential causes. Our hospital nurse manager also played a critical role by raising a point of recording data of the department in which maximum patients' falls happened. This aids in highlighting the weakness that the cardiac department was facing. The data acquired was utilized by the administration, and they decided to use elevators for patients that are overweight or are unconsciousness.
While discussing the use of Electronic Health records that was mandated by the president of US George Bush, I think that this system will aid in collecting more information regarding the issues that patients are facing. Also, with the help of this system, the data of a patient’s history can be retrieved easily. Thus, improving patients’ safety (Kilbridge & Classen, 2008).
