Response to Ameila

The vulnerability of the elderly in our society has been a concerning issue for a long time now. Ameila has rightly decided to point out the sufferings of the elderly due to the vulnerability. Ameila has argued that the elderly population is vulnerable and it is an interesting idea put forward by Ameila. Moreover, the elderly are vulnerable due to their debilitating mental and physical health. Ameila has consolidated her argument with an example that shows vulnerabilities vary with the disease (Barusch, 2011). For instance, an elderly individual suffering from Parkinson's disease will be vulnerable in a way different from someone suffering from Dementia. The example presented by Ameila is an apt representation of the fact that vulnerabilities in elderly individuals vary with the disease. Furthermore, Ameila has cited a summary of an article published in the Journal of Gerontological Social Work. The author contends that many people died due to earthquake were above 60 years of age. Ameila highlighted that the reason behind such a huge number is due to the fact the elderly individuals move slowly in comparison to someone younger. Furthermore, Ameila cited the work of an author published in Generations. Ameila pointed out a sad reality that elderly suffering from dementia is susceptible to abuse than anyone else (Rosen, 2014). Furthermore, Ameila has laid down a plan that can help to reduce the vulnerabilities of elderly individuals to some extent. Certainly, Ameila righlty suggested that as a nurse, it is our responsibility to ask questions to the elderly. This assessment can help in identifying if an elderly individual is getting abused. Moreover, Ameila suggested that a nurse must be able to quickly identify the signs of elder abuse. Ameila suggested this because most of the times, the elderly cannot speak for themselves. Lastly, Ameila has rightly concluded that elderly people are vulnerable. The extent of their vulnerability can be reduced by recognizing the vulnerabilities (Haenisch et.al, 2015). Therefore, nurses must know the vulnerabilities that the elderly might experience.
