Reflective Assessment
Ethics and morality are much important in this modern globalized world. this is the twenty first century world where the civic sense has improved a lot. Nevertheless, several moral-ethical dilemmas still exist as human life is a complex affair. To solve this moral ethical problem, several ethical theories exist (“Ethical Theories: A Book of Readings - Google Books,” n.d.). However, the theory the best explains my experience is the theory of utility or the utilitarianism. This is a moral philosophy that advocates the gates happiness for the greatest number of people. This principle happiness for perplexed me as I was caught between considering my own happiness vis-a-vis looking after the happiness of the greatest number of people.
I belong to the consequentialist school of thought where there is more focus on the consequences of the actions. So, the famous and notable consequentialists in the history are utilitarian philosophers such as John Stuart Mill and the Jeremy Bentham (“Utilitarianism - John Mill - Google Books,” n.d.). These social thinkers are quite helpful as I am attempting to develop my own perspective on ethics and morality. The readings of such thinkers are indeed a great resource for me.
I was unable to solve that ethical dilemma of looking after my own well-being or being attentive to others. I was not clear-headed and was unable to choose on the side. Though I knew the principle of utility and the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people, but I was still ambivalent. As I am much aware and cognizant of the positive side of ethical ends and the utilitarianism, so I will definitely opt for more happiness for the other people as my own being is smaller in comparison. I will not become selfish and egoist and I will be more attentive to others’ desires and wants as this is the real source of happens for any persons. Ethical dilemmas need to be solved rationally as it is mentioned in ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"zneURspd","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(\\uc0\\u8220{}Ethics in Personal Life - Ethics Sage,\\uc0\\u8221{} n.d.)","plainCitation":"(“Ethics in Personal Life - Ethics Sage,” n.d.)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":311,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/ZD9MNZ2P/items/MDJWW6VQ"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/ZD9MNZ2P/items/MDJWW6VQ"],"itemData":{"id":311,"type":"webpage","title":"Ethics in Personal Life - Ethics Sage","URL":"https://www.ethicssage.com/2018/09/ethics-in-personal-life.html","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",6,26]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (“Ethics in Personal Life - Ethics Sage,” n.d.). This is the right approach to view real-life problems objectively.
