Group projects are important in almost every academic course. They are common to all academic courses. The participants play important and effective roles to make the presentations or projects successful and informative for their fellows and teachers. The roles and responsibilities of group participants help them understand a structured team environment and be successful in all the course activities and assignments.

Reflective Role

For our communication course, our group was assigned a presentation on the topic ‘Problems of Cyberbullying’. Our group had five members; we carefully planned and divided our roles according to the ease and availability of every member. One of our fellows who is good at leadership skills and can manage good discussion and coordination took the role of the leader/facilitator. Another fellow who possesses good skills in taking notes of all decisions and report preparation was given the role of secretary. The group decided to have two presenters so that the material and information could be conveyed properly and effectively to the listeners. Two of our fellows who were confident and good speakers decided to take roles of presenters. I took the role of a researcher as I am good with resource collection and can monitor planning and time effectively.

Relational roles are important in an online class setting. It is important for the listeners to have communication and relation building with the group members giving presentations and with the teacher. The relation roles in our group were played by everyone in a good manner. For example, I possess an outgoing personality so I am happy to listen to the problems of others and act as a team counsellor. The two presenters once engaged in an argument and had a clash. I talked to them and helped them resolve the conflict.

Every individual in my group had separate roles and each of us performed the duties effectively. Along with the individual roles and tasks, we also performed the relational roles and showed good team work. It affected the outcome of our project in a positive way as we got the appreciation of our fellows and the teacher and achieved good grades.
