Personal Network Report
Introduction
Having been part of the industry and getting its academic know-how, I have observed that ideas and concepts matter. One remains of no worth if he or she relies upon the already used ideas. If one plans to use the existing ideas or refigure it in a new manner, it takes a long time for deliberating and analysing. I believe that it is not be my cup of tea if I focus on reorienting the already presented ideas.
What I need to do in the field which I have been studying for quite a long, I am still less confident. I have analysed thoroughly my goals and ambitions, have put myself in different situations and have recalled the ideas which I had in my mind while choosing the media industry. After such experimentations, I concluded that I am here to give my ideas a picture, which should be visible to others and will create my reputation.
I had creative capabilities since from my early days at school. I remember how just a click of an image developed in me new insights. I then use to write creative essays and stories based on those imaginations. At times, just an ordinary movement or a random voice was adequate to create a new story. Simply putting this, I have a creative mind and I opted media industry, as it can provide me a platform to add depictions to my imaginations.
With now part of this industry, I will keep my attention focused on developing new ideas. I believe there are enormous opportunities for those like me, who are enthusiastic and focus on their own rough imagination of things. I am eager to work on projects which suggest employing ones creative aspect with offering key responsibilities. I had been working as a starter for quite a long, and now I believe I need a head start.
How to get to start?
In terms of starting my career, both of my interviewees had different opinions. In my conversations with Baz Luhrmann, he referred that if one wants to take a start in the industry, he will need to relocate to the towns where the industry exists. For him, the opportunity of excelling in this career, it is necessary to be a part of a population which makes it happen. Nicole Kidman, however, remarked that in Australia, it is just Sydney and Melbourne which have the opportunities to make a person grow. She referred to these example for the fact that in Australia only these two cities are taking the lead in film making and other media related sciences.
Peter Weir was of the opinion that it might not be that much important from where one takes the start, rather for him one’s own passion and curiosity are workable. He suggests being more truthful to the field and thorough in thinking. As like his works, he was also different from others in the opinion.
Some random interviewee also suggested that acknowledging the desire in the first place is most important of all. They had based their narrative on books and other things which they believe are more worth considering rather meeting people in person. Finally, I observed that almost every interviewee was of the opinion to start the career as soon as possible and never get exhausted soon.
What does it take to be a producer?
I have interacted with many people during this research. I know what it’s like being an artist, director, writer or even a helper. I don’t find anything interesting in these roles since they all are working in a specific direction with a certain kind of a thing in their minds. Such interactions with people develop more the sense of being a producer. I rejected all the stuff which I was informed like being a producer is. For me this job is like exploring all of yourself.
I have read books which includes the debate over what it takes to be a producer. I have created my mind about this field by reading and by not observing, what people in this area are doing. For example, during this research, I met a person who was working as an employed producer. It gave me a bad feeling, for the fact that he was selling his ideas for pennies. I agree not all producers are self- employed, but I believe in the idea that each producer should have a creative mind ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"eDXh3boc","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Pocock et al., 2012)","plainCitation":"(Pocock et al., 2012)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":392,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/5YYFHYTR"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/5YYFHYTR"],"itemData":{"id":392,"type":"book","title":"Time bomb: Work, rest and play in Australia today","publisher":"UNSW Press","source":"Google Scholar","title-short":"Time bomb","author":[{"family":"Pocock","given":"Barbara"},{"family":"Skinner","given":"Natalie"},{"family":"Williams","given":"Philippa"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2012"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Pocock et al., 2012).
If one is deciding to join this industry as a producer, I can suggest him or her to just be confident about their imaginative skills. Issues such as financial constraints, less knowledge of things and jam-packed mind are what restrict one’s inner abilities. If one is so eager to join the industry, he needs to take decision on firm grounds and over sustainable factors.
I have observed many producers in Hollywood which make ‘studio deals’, it is like working independently ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"SpazRwdk","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Lobato and Thomas, 2018)","plainCitation":"(Lobato and Thomas, 2018)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":393,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/Y4W26CG9"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/Y4W26CG9"],"itemData":{"id":393,"type":"book","title":"The informal media economy","publisher":"John Wiley & Sons","source":"Google Scholar","author":[{"family":"Lobato","given":"Ramon"},{"family":"Thomas","given":"Julian"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2018"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Lobato and Thomas, 2018). Studio deals is a new concept which allow producers to use space offered by the studio. With respect to financial bonding, tax incentives, financial loan overseas marketing, the studio look after these affairs. In return both the studio and the producer can make handsome financial gains by keeping themselves independent from each other. Keeping in view a hard-hitting job of being a producer, I plan to engage with people in a more cooperative manner which consequently can ensure my gradual upbringing and the fulfilment to the general sense of this field.
The qualities of a producer and what I require?
I interacted with Nicole Kidman. She requires no introduction when it comes to seeing her career as a producer. In reply to my query, what it takes to be a producer. She replied ‘one must have the art of connecting people’. I had for long tried to grasp the essence of her statement. I now believe is that she wanted to build a sense of knowing what this job requires.
I also had the chance to interact with Baz Luhrmann. It was a very short interaction, I think for some two or three minutes. He mentioned me to never let your inner abilities down whatever the circumstances are. He gave the insight into what being a creative person is. Their statements and remarks are related to the literature which I have read to satisfy my curiosity related to being a producer.
In the book ‘Movie Making’ by Sidney Lumet, the author presents to the readers the ideas as what it takes for being a producer. Although a little materialistic, the book gives an idea about how it becomes hard to signature yourself if you rely upon the existing sum of things. His reading suggests that having a little idea of things cannot always serve the purpose. He mentions ‘idea needs to be well sorted and supported by imagination.’ This reading opened up to me what is the worth of imaginations.
‘Movie Making’ is just a single book I remember for the reason of its extraordinary content ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"Fkz44nf0","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Lumet, 2010)","plainCitation":"(Lumet, 2010)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":394,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/EZ7KJF36"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/s8f0QVnP/items/EZ7KJF36"],"itemData":{"id":394,"type":"book","title":"Making movies","publisher":"Vintage","source":"Google Scholar","author":[{"family":"Lumet","given":"Sidney"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["2010"]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Lumet, 2010). I had a bunch of collection which had opened up to me what is the world for a producer is like. My idea of being a producer is like an all-rounder player on a field, who looks up to the things in a very general manner and takes the charge of affairs in his own hand. As Jeremy Thomas says ‘a producer must have the ability to cash the flash.’
Self- confidence in this area is a much small aspect. It leads the way only to a certain level. It can just take one to hold on-camera or recognize the inner abilities. Throughout the entire career, it is just the motivation and the level of trust one puts into his abilities to become a producer. These are also my values and inspirations for a being successful producer.
Conclusion
Throughout the interviews and my research, I have come to know that almost every producer had not planned things as they turned out. For example, many in my interviewee list had already started their professional lives but deep inside them a creative urge brought them to this arena. I understand from this fact that the future in this field cannot be that much planned and directed but one actually first need to take small steps in the start.
From the complete scenario, I have come to the conclusion that I need to roughly plan things at first, it will be easy to grip them in future. I also noticed that I am a little different to whom I have interviewed, I have observed that they have relied on someone to make things happen which in my case is almost impossible. I do not have any acquaintance who can help me in making a start. Finally, I need to make my curiosity and creativity alive. This will be how I can survive in the field.
