I0D2p I decided to visit the Kimbell art museum to do this museum research paper. On I was received by Mr. Levi who would be my tour guide through the visit to the museum. He started by giving me a brief history of the museum. He said that the Kimbell art museum was started way back in 1972 after Kimbell and his wife had spent several years collecting paintings and artwork from Europe, America, Asia and some parts of Africa to fill their galleries. When Kimbell died in 1964, his estate was used for the development of the museum to fill the artwork and paintings from all over the world. When moving around the museum, we saw several paintings and artwork including woodwork and modeling. Though this specific art caught my eyes, and this was the mirror bearer, 6th-century wood and red hematite with a 35.9 cm height and a width of 14.25. The word curving is said to have been done by Maya art.
From my tour guides explanation of the origin of this art was during the Spanish colonial regime. In that era, the Spanish colonial authorities decided to destroy all the wood carvings objects because they assumed that all of them were being used for idolatry. They wanted to make their subjects worship whatever they believed was good for them. The mirror bearer wood curve was to be used as a symbol that linked the people with their belief. In case of anything that they wanted to pray or ask for they could just bow down to the mirror bearer to intercede their prayers to the creator.
This art is designed in a way that a male individual is kneeling wearing a long skirt that covers the knee. The hem of the skirt shows a jagged design that bordered from the top by a twisted braid underneath the fringe. The rectangular note near the stomach describes the real garment that sags to the knee. There is also a shawl that rotates around the neck and goes down to the arms to sag an inch back. The mirror bearer also has a distinct hairstyle or a nice hair dress which I accurately curled. The eyes sockets of the mirror bearer are curved outwards which insinuates that the inlay of the shell and the obsidian are properly. There are several ornaments of the ears. This similarly shows that the mirror bearer could have been ranked as a high member elite in the society because of the ornaments he has. There is also a reddish iron oxide painting on the head showing that he would have been painted with an elaborate effect. The artist also did his work by making the curve to be a dwarf person which may also have symbolized that this specific person may be a royal court dwarf. The daftness is also shown by the hair on the face of the curve and the forehead indicates the dwarfism characteristics. This also indicated the people who had very important powers in the Mesoamerican courts.
The mirror bearer depicts an image of an important ruler majorly by the courtly dwarves. The main purpose of the curve is to show the image of the Maya lords and ladies in those times. These kinds of curves have also been found in some places like Mexico and Central America. The mirrors in the curve are planes of reflection that are conceived as loopholes. The semi permanence mirror shows the ruler during the period that he was on the throne.
In conclusion, the artwork makes me feel that the ancient culture is being appreciated even todays contemporary society. This is because most of the features displayed are used even today. I like the artwork since it shows high levels of creativity and gives a vivid description of how the former lords looked like and how they used to dress up. It also helps a critical thinker understand why some features were used how. I appreciated the kind of craft and creativity that has been used on this art that is from the head neck to the knee. It had given me a clear picture of a person I never saw.
