Language Related Issues
Introduction
The basic concept of moving forward and making healthy relations is based upon communication (Hall, 2018). The perfect world doesnt exist and to move a little forward the only thing which helps is the power to communicate. the language barriers have become a great issue as the diversities are growing as a result of migration processes from late 1950s. Students are facing this issue as they are moving to different countries from higher education (Kinginger, 2015). The language barrier persists, and this causes many issues in academic process. Bilingualism, language diversity and other such scenarios need to be addressed as well so students can have some relaxation with this issue. Bilingualism, etymological inundation, legacy dialects, second language learning, and changes in the whole association of instructing and figuring out how to oblige classroom populaces of extraordinary assorted variety are among the issues that Cummins addresses in this article (Verrinder, Ostini Phillips, 2016).
Discussion
With diversity, follows language barrier. It is not only experienced by students, many people from around the globe face this issue from moving one place to another (Wu, Garza Guzman, 2015). There are receptive language issues as well as expressive issues.
Experiencing difficulty following oral speeches
Requiring oral headings rehashed or reworded
Issues understanding inquiries
Trouble moving in verbal settings, yet not in different settings
Deferred in gaining disentangling aptitudes
Poor perusing cognizance past the fourth grade regardless of having a decent sight vocabulary
Inconvenience learning an unknown dialect
Non-verbal (doesnt participate in talking and a conservative nature)
Unreasonable utilization of basic, revelatory sentences or deficient sentences
Reluctant or moderate discourse
Unreasonable utilization of interruption words, for example, ummm, you know, as, and so on.
Poor utilization of words that integrate things, for example, first, next, at that point, yet, lastly
Absence of verbal support in discussions and classroom discourses
Poor composed articulation
Brief answers and inability to expand
Repetition (utilizing same words again and again) of vocabulary or thoughts
Maintaining a strategic distance from pronouns
Having a tendency to misconceive the earlier learning of the audience (forgetting subtleties that assistance the audience comprehend what you are stating)
Hard time recovering explicit words from memory
Circumventing the word with a definition rather (diversion). For instance, saying you know, the dampness dropping out from the mists rather than precipitation
Another issue that is faced by foreign students is the issue with phonics. Every word is pronounced with a specific sound and that is unique to every word as it is (Read, 2016). Students and people find it difficult to associate such words to their respective sounds and this hinders their ability to pronounce the words. This is a common problem in children and if the issue is not addressed to in early stage, it will become a permanent problem. The other factor that comes into play is how a person differentiates between similar sounding words and how they can be pronounced. Again, one of the common factors of language barrier. This issue can be taken from the example of the words bell and bill. Without hearing properly, mispronunciation of words can take place and if the problem is not addressed, it can become permanent. Pronouncing Siduation instead of situation is one of the examples. Next comes the issue of morphology and the issue of syntax. This means that the person is not able to understand the words properly causing mispronunciation (Pennington Richards, 2016). The meaning of the word might be understood by the person but the issue of differentiating and breaking the words will be difficult. Not understanding the syntax completely will hinder his ability to speak with fluency and effortlessly hence causing a language barrier.
Then there comes the issue of semantics. Technical education requires understanding of technical words and learning technical methods (Wang, 2018). The subjects of literature, engineering, medical sciences require students to learn many complex words and use them in daily life. This study describes how a student might not be able to say nominative, deterioration, pseudopodia and other such words. Even these words will be difficult to use in sentences or breaking them down to be used in sentences. Building sentences, using the forms of verbs and the tenses to be used in a proper way all are the factors of language issues that are faced by man students and people around the globe. These kinds of issues are faced by students mostly as they are required to makes assignments, write essays and articles as a part of their projects. This is a difficult situation for them to use a secondary language to perform their tasks and ultimately, they dont get good grades. These and many other issues need to be addressed at all levels. Even while applying for work, employers reject application on the pure basis of lack of communication skills because of language barriers. It is said that if the communication level of a person is good, he or she can land a job easily. This is true all over the world. Just by speaking good English, one can land a job and start earning livelihood.
A very famous and comedic sitcom Mind Your Language can be addressed here. People from different countries, now living in England, were attending classes to learn English. Their communication with each other and with the instructor purely defines how much of a language barrier is a issue for people that are migrating to foreign countries (Macgregor Folinazzo, 2018). The pronunciation of words, the structuring of sentences, the process of hearing, reading and writing are the hurdles that new people face while moving and migrating. Same goes for the students who are striving to get higher education from a foreign privileged university.
There has been a lot of work done on the language issue and many great articles have been written and papers published. The study keeps on adding more and more material on how to tackle this issue and there are many ways to handle it. every now and then, there are professional language classes for teaching purposes and correcting the mistakes and perfecting the language issue. There are many dialects and languages used by many great nations to communicate and learning all of them is a heft task. People prefer learning and speaking 3-4 languages and excelling in them. This is not an easy thing for everyone as it requires time and money. Time required to learn a language varies. For example, it would take nearly 5-6 years for academic student to excel in French (Frydenberg, Liang Muller, 2017). Excelling in a language means to perfect the modules of listening, speaking, reading and writing. For English, the time ratio is a little less. But it is said that one should start from early age, as early as 8 years old to learn a language must more perfectly. Any language can be learned and perfected if it is started at an early age (Ali, Othman Karim, 2018). Listening to speeches and watching videos will put up a huge difference and make it easy to learn a language.
Conclusion
At present there are many apps that allow a user to learn language in a matter of time. It will not allow him to excel but provide the basics of a language he wants to learn. This makes it a bit easy for the user to take further steps in learning more languages in easier way. Universities provide the option of learning secondary language the students so that the mode of communication can be helpful, and the students can enjoy the course of stay at the university.
