Lost in Translation – Discussion Board 2
Lost in Translation is a beautiful film. It is a pure work of art that has been raised to the level of a masterpiece by the director that took a simple screenplay and directed the movie in a way that blew life into the story. It is just mesmerizing to see Bill Murray and Scarlet Johansen be their finest selves on the screen while doing nothing out of the ordinary.
The film focuses on the nature of human attraction. The sort of attraction that does not lead to a carnal culmination of feelings, but makes one feel whole again. People usually seek such an emotional response from the people they intimately associate themselves with. However, two strangers at a hotel bar, lost at what to do with their lives, choosing to share their solitude with one another, for just a while, is something many can relate to CITATION Pet04 \l 1033 (Bradshaw, 2004).
This very part, the scene from the hotel bar with Johansen and Murray just sitting at the hotel bar, telling one another about their marital lives, what they are doing in the city, and even the fact that they cannot sleep is nothing out of the ordinary. However, the darkness of the space, with the only source of light focused on the pair, lighting them while drowning all that surrounds them in darkness is something poignant to behold. Add in the fact that the two do not introduce themselves to one another throughout the scene just shows that one does not need to have a lifelong bond with the other person to feel close to them, or have them put all their worries at bay CITATION Pet041 \l 1033 (Rainer, 2004).
A movie that is rather similar to Lost in Translation is a 2014 release by the name of Before We Go. It shows the story of two strangers that run into each other one fateful night in New York City and spend the rest of the evening together CITATION Sco14 \l 1033 (Foundas, 2014). Near the end of the movie, Chris Evans, playing Nick picks up a phone from a phone booth and uses it as a "time machine" and pretends to call himself. He says that he will meet a woman and "you will need her more than she needs you". The last part reminded me of Lost in Translation and how someone that listens is enough.
