AbstractThis paper will compare and analyze laptops and iPads with respect to features, cost, reliability, portability and software. Additionally, social, ethical and legal issues with the use of technology will be assessed.
Keywords Technology, iOS, Windows, RAM, Operating system
Introduction
In a fast evolving world, which is technology driven, it is absolutely essential to take full advantage of technology and cater to the needs accordingly 1. Use of technology in sports particularly has bear unprecedented results. Keeping this in mind, our sports club has decided to do away with the near-obsolete PC system and the camera used for official photography. And to replace the old PC, the club is contemplating to add a laptop or an iPad to it. The addition of a laptop or an iPad will ease some burden from the shoulders of the president and the secretary of the club, as it will enable them to manage the affairs of the club from home effectively. However, the club has serious concerns that whether a laptop or an iPad would cater to the need of the club Answer to this question lies in the comparison of the features, cost, reliability, size, portability and software of these two. Additionally, the social, ethical and legal issues surrounding this decision will be addressed in this paper.
Comparison
The Laptop vs Ipad Debate
With the launch of laptops in the 20th century, everyone thought that technology has seen its pinnacle 2. However, the launching of iPads a decade back has triggered a fierce debate. The debate seems never-ending. Every side seems to have an argument in place regarding which one is better.
Features
It is the year 2019 and technology companies are attracting buyers. With so much competition in the marketplace, technology companies are adding small quirks and features 3. These quirks and features are what catch the eye of the buyer. Ipads are touch responsive so as many laptops. Touchscreens allow intuitive interaction. Processors can be dubbed as the brain of the computer 4. Processors indicate the performance of the device. In simple words, a fast processor will tell how fast your device could operate. Next comes RAM. Random Access Memory decides how fast the processor can load and how many programs it can load at the same time 5. Probably the most important feature is the hard disk of your device. The hard disk comes in different sizes. It is used to store data permanently. Although there is little to separate the iPad and the laptops nowadays regarding features. The reason for this is they both are at par regarding features. Laptops are coming with i7 processors. Ipads have embedded 64-bit dual core processors. While for technology enthusiasts these numbers may have high value, in our case, these numbers are more than enough to cater the needs. As far as RAM and hard disks are concerned, laptops and iPads have more than enough of these two to cater to the needs of the club.
Cost
With little to separate between laptops and iPads, the
next thing that needs attention, when deciding which to choose, is the price tag. The gadgets that are loaded full of cutting edge features and applications comes with a hefty price 6. The starting price for laptops laptop is 1100. Meanwhile, the iPad starts at 999.
Reliability
Next factor that influences the decision-making process
of buying a new gadget is reliability 7. Laptops tend to outlive iPads. Laptops need a flat surface beneath them in order to be used fully. However, iPads can be used in any way a user wants. This makes them unsafe, hence unreliable.
Portability
By design, laptops and iPads are made in a way that an
individual can take them out with them 8. Ipads weigh less than the laptops laptop. An iPad weighs 469g. Meanwhile, laptops weigh around 1lb. This implies that the iPad is far more portable than laptops.
Software
There is so far little to separate between laptops and iPads except for price and portability. The next factor, and probably the most important of all, is the underlying operating system. Apple has the iOS operating system installed. The iOS operating system is widely considered to be a secure operating system that provides the user with ample features and software to increase productivity. Meanwhile, other manufacturers in the marketplace have a Windows operating system installed. Windows, too, provide users with different software to improve productivity.
Social, Ethical, and legal issues
Before the advent of the internet, people tend to have their personal information undisclosed 9. But in todays globalized world, information of masses can be easily obtained. Some recent events that the world has witnessed show how easily information can be stolen and used. The same concern lies in the scenario when the clubs secretary or the president would take laptops or iPads with themselves to home. In their absence, anyone can easily penetrate into the system and get their hands onto sensitive information. From an ethical point of view of the same problem shows that a multitude of issues is there to be addressed. The system can be hacked and information can be used maliciously. This makes the members of the club open to blackmailing and online harassment. Legal issues include identity theft. Identity theft can have serious consequences for the person whose identity has been stolen.
Conclusion
Taking into account the comparison of the laptops
and iPads, one can conclude that features have very little to play in the scenario. However, cost, reliability and portability are important factors to consider when one has to buy a new gadget.
