Introduction
Life is full of twists and turns and there come times when one has to make the hardest decisions of life. Critical moments in life increase the complexity and demand to take decisions in most difficult times. Decisions become worst, when they are blend with the element of confusion of choosing between right and wrong. Man is left with the choices where he has to make a decision that he does not want to take but that decision becomes the demand of the time. At times, when one finds it hard to make a decision, ethics come to rescue (Mootz et al, 2019). Though, it is a tough call to decide in case when you and your people are targeted but it is the time when you have to think of others as well who are innocent. If I were the unit leader who has to respond against the firing of assailants while evacuating the American ambassador from Yemen, I would have responded calmly as I need to save the innocent people as well who were not involved in the firing.
Discussion
It would be difficult for me to respond against violence and firing of those who just wanted to create unrest. It would be my call that could save great number of people who are just protesting as they believe it is their right to raise their voice against anything they dont like. If were in this situation, where I and my team were attacked I would not an open fire on the crowd as it mainly consists of innocent people who were just protesting for their rights (Moore et al, 2019). Considering the utilitarian theory of ethics, it could be said that one must take a decision that would be in favor of majority. I would not fire back at the crowd in which few of the muggers are hiding and are shooting for creating unrest and violence.
I would avoid firing back at the crowd by keeping in consideration the consequence of my action. Utilitarianism demands us to move beyond the personal interests for the greater good. I would not risk the lives of hundreds of protesters rather I would try all the peaceful ways so that I could avoid firing back at the crowd. I would not bother if I or some of my soldiers would be hurt or killed as the assailants actually want me to take a wrong decision so that they could arose hatred in people of Yemen against America (Amer et al, 2019). Another reason why I would not fire back at the crowd is, to avoid the clash between the two countries that would take worst turn and may plague peace of two countries (America and Yemen) for years.
Conclusion
Considering the whole situation, I would say that I would not at all fire back at the crowd who are not shooting rather are just protesting that is their legal right. Keeping the utilitarian theory of ethics in mind, I would focus more on the consequences of my actions. I would simply avoid firing rather I would ask my team to save them and back off in order to save innocent people from being killed by us. I would suggest my soldiers to back off and let the Yemen government handle this situation as if we fire back at the crowd (that is the intention of the assailants) conflict would arise between the two countries that may have everlasting damaging effects only on the innocent people present in the crowd but on coming generations as well. So as a whole, it could be concluded that if I were in the same situation I would not fire back at the crowd that mostly consists of innocent people.
