Participants and Setting

Before the beginning of qualitative research it is essential to identify the target population for greater accuracy. The method for identification of participants is used to determine the scope of research which aids in the identification of few qualities that should be present in the targeted population. The target population for this research is young Muslim women who are the victim of FGM. The sample size is 8, and all the participants should be between 16 to 30 years old.

Procedures

Different tools for data collection are used in qualitative research. Methods like participant observation, survey, and interviews are the tools that are most beneficial for the collection of data in detail. Other methods are video recording and photography which are also essential for ethnographic studies. For this research the data collection tool that was most suitable was surveying. I used the link of my survey from Google and shared it with Young Muslim Women through social media platforms like what’s app, Facebook and Instagram. Thus it sampling technique was a simple random sampling. It was an economical and quick method for data collection, and all the data was recorded on my laptop through the responses that I received in my email. The selection criteria were that the participant should be a woman. Secondly she should have the Muslim faith, her age should be between 16 and 30, and lastly, she should be a victim of FGM. All the participants are located in the United States and are the legal residents of the country. There are no incentives provided to the participants, and the females participated voluntarily.

Prior to answering the questions, there was Consent Form present which consists of two parts that are the information sheet and the consent certificate. The information sheet contains the aims and objective of the study and its significance. The consent certificate allows the participant to declare that she had read all the details and is giving the answers willingly.

Discussion

The results of the survey make it apparent that FGM is a practice which impacts the mental health of the young Muslim women is affected because of FGM. These women are treated as backward among their peer group which increases their depression.
