Introduction
During the past few years, an increase in the number of gun violence has been witnessed. Gun has long been used in history, whether its for war, hunting or self-defense. With the increased use of gun, an increase in capacity for killing has also been observed. Incidents of gun violence also increased dramatically for the past few years. Various reasons are there that caused an increase in gun violence due to which mass shooting incidents are becoming more common than ever before. The United States is dealing with numbers of issues at present and mass shooting is one of the central issues that has put everyones life on risk, especially of the youngsters. In America, every other day, people faces issue of mass shooting and one of the recent mass shooting happen in New Orleans, Louisiana on December 01, 2019.
Discussion
Mass shooting that occurred on December 01, 2019, 10 people who were gun fired before 330 Sunday in the 700 blocks of Canal Street. After the shooting when Louisiana State Police and federal officers initiated the investigation, a person was detained from the scene, but they cannot say anything about this person whether he was involved in this mass shooting or not. When New Orleans Police started investigation about this mass shooting, Shaun Ferguson (superintendent) stated, police officers were there on the block when the shooting happened but none of the officers was injured. From the investigation report, it was found that mass shooting was done by 1 gun. The gun involved in this mass shooting was unknown whether it was stolen or not (Braga et al, 2008), no details could be obtained about it. This shooting included ten people who were shot and out of these ten, no one was in critical condition. No traces of red flag were found as the mass shooting was random and none of the individuals were specifically targeted. None of the people at the scene had the red flag.
In this mass shooting, out of the ten victims, only one was sixteen years old and the rest were above eighteen. Victims were taken to a nearby medical center, University Medical Center and Tulane Medical Center where one person come there by a private vehicle (DeConde et al, 2003). This mass shooting was done when the big night of the revelry around the French Quarter ended when around ten thousand visitors were downtown for a football game. It could not be found whose gun it was and according to the officials, the unknown gun was recovered from the scene and no arrests were made. Investigators are trying to gather evidence so that justice could be provided to those who became victim of this mass shooting. Police is encouraging people to provide information so that the offender could be punished.
Surveillance video showed that people flee when suddenly mass shooting started on Canal Street (Kanter Paul, 2019). It was the video that spotted light on the shocking aftermath and in the video, it could be seen that when the crowd was walking, a person pulled out his gun and opened fire. Soon after the gunshot, people started running in panic and also law enforcement agencies started marching at the scene (10 People Wounded in New Orleans Shooting, Police Say.). Mass shooting has become an important issue that needs to be taken seriously for saving innocent lives. There is a need to enhance the practices that would prevent the reoccurrence of such incidents. Mass shootings could be stopped if few things would be considered. High capacity magazines and assault weapons must be ban. A change needs to be in the tracking system of the gun owners. A system must be introduced in which the background of the gun owner must be checked. Also, a change in the orders would be effective for stopping such violent incidents and the order of restraining (extreme-risk protective orders) must be given. There are preventive measures that could be taught for reducing the number of mass shooting victims. Preventative measures that could be used for keeping people safe from the mass shooting include proper training, how to cope with such situation. In most of the cases educational institutions, students and teachers are targeted so a change must be brought in educational policies and teachers must be allowed to have a gun with them. Active shooting drills must be made a compulsory part of all the institutions so that teachers and students could save them from such severe loss.
Conclusion
So taking a look at the above-mentioned incident of mass shooting, it could be concluded that gun violence is becoming common than ever before in the U.S. In some cases, along with solid evidence people must be given red flag so that they could use a gun for their protection in extreme conditions. There is a need to bring in a change in the ways of dealing with different situations (Spiegler Smith, 2019). Teachers must be permitted to keep weapons so that they could save students and themselves. It is important to focus on certain measurements so that mass shootings could be prevented. Measurements that would be effective are imposing ban on certain weapons and keeping the proper records of the gun owners so that if any violation happens directly the owner could be caught. Training should be given in educational institutes for dealing with situations like a mass shooting.
