Social Problems
Every society has some members who are handicapped or disable. They are not fully equipped to contribute to the good work of the society. In order to be really effective and efficient in its nature, every society needs to take care of such mentally-ill people. It is the prime responsibility of those-in-power that they provide a good living to such a weak section of the population. Mentally-ill people should not be ostracized at all as this would exacerbate their grievances. Intricate social problems in multicultural societies must be solved prudently ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"kndqEFY8","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Dein, 1997)","plainCitation":"(Dein, 1997)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":369,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/ZD9MNZ2P/items/6KNVFT2N"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/ZD9MNZ2P/items/6KNVFT2N"],"itemData":{"id":369,"type":"article-journal","title":"ABC of mental health: Mental health in a multiethnic society","container-title":"BMJ","page":"473-476","volume":"315","issue":"7106","source":"www.bmj.com","abstract":"People from ethnic minorities comprise just over three million people or 5.5% of the British population. Their geographical distribution is highly uneven, with most living in greater London, the West Midlands, and other metropolitan counties.\n\nDoctors in Britain increasingly encounter patients whose values and beliefs differ substantially from their own. Without a knowledge of other cultural beliefs and practices, doctors can easily fall prey to errors of diagnosis, resulting in inappropriate management and poor compliance. For example, a delusion is a false belief not amenable to reason and out of context with a person's cultural and religious beliefs: diagnosing someone as deluded must take into account cultural and religious factors.\n\nCulture refers to the categories, plans, and rules that people use to interpret their world and act purposefully within it. These rules are learned in childhood while growing up in society. Cultural factors relate to mental illness in several ways. In the first instance, culture determines what is seen as normal and abnormal within a given society.\n\nView this table:\n\nEthnic composition of Great Britain in 1991*\n\n\n\n“Culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, art, morals, law, customs, etc”\n\nDefinition of culture , Tyler 1874\n\nCulture relates to mental illness in several ways, especially its mode of presentation and response to treatment\n\nDefinitions of what constitutes normal and abnormal behaviour vary widely from culture to culture and, within any given group, are dependent on demographic factors such as age and sex, social class, and occupation. Behaviours that may be perceived as abnormal at one time may be regarded as normal at other times, such as during carnivals. At these times it is culturally acceptable for men to dress as women or animals.\n\nHowever, it seems that there is no culture in which men and women remain oblivious to erratic, disturbed, threatening, …","DOI":"10.1136/bmj.315.7106.473","ISSN":"0959-8138, 1468-5833","note":"PMID: 9284670","title-short":"ABC of mental health","journalAbbreviation":"BMJ","language":"en","author":[{"family":"Dein","given":"Simon"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[["1997",8,23]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Dein, 1997).
Conservatives and liberals view this problem differently as they are not on the same when it comes to a social problem. Conservatives view mentally or physically handicapped people as a source of distress or burden. While for liberals it is not distress at all as they really want to help and uplift such people in society. As a matter of fact, this social malady needs to be solved with much pragmatism and affection as this is the essence of good societies. Some good amount of stipend needs to be fixed for such people if society really wants to them to be included in its ambit of a good life.
For those people who are mentally ill and do not seek help from others, it is mandatory to choose another strategy for such distressed people. Perhaps, they need to be really guided and counseled in a better way. Such mentally sick people should not be left on their own as they wish most of the times. Such people need to be advised that this help is not some favor upon themselves. Thus, it is necessary to transform the mindset towards help and assistance to such a mentally unstable person.
The Obamacare program was the great initiative of the erstwhile US president Barack Obama. He initiated this health care program with the motive of a good life for all. However, this program could not attain the adequate success rate as it faced public opposition due to high costs and various loopholes.
