Discussion Indentured Servitude
Indentured servants are those people that signed contracts, due to which they would work for a period of multiple years in exchange for transport to Virginia along with food and shelter. The contract might be 4 to 7 years for adults and it would be greater for kids ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"gXtxVNji","properties":{"formattedCitation":"({\\i{}Indentured Servants in Colonial Virginia})","plainCitation":"(Indentured Servants in Colonial Virginia)","noteIndex":0},"citationItems":[{"id":22,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/local/jKYaO8V5/items/JB2HWG74"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/local/jKYaO8V5/items/JB2HWG74"],"itemData":{"id":22,"type":"webpage","title":"Indentured Servants in Colonial Virginia","URL":"https://www.encyclopediavirginia.org/indentured_servants_in_colonial_virginia","accessed":{"date-parts":[["2019",12,20]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} (Indentured Servants in Colonial Virginia).
The main difference between slavery and indentured servants is that the punishment for indentured servants was more severe and it could lead to an extension of the contract as punishment. The punishment could also be according to the law that has been written for that area.
The indenture servants were transported by ship. Due to extensive travel hours and tough weather conditions, the people on the ship would face many hardships. It would be a battle for surviving the extreme and harsh weather. The people who would survive would have to face even more challenges upon their arrival at the colonies.
On reaching the colonies, the servants would have to face more grueling challenges. The servants would have to face a lack of resources like food, water, and shelter. Unless the servants made arrangements for these, it would be impossible for them to survive in such an unforgiving environment. Also, the place where they would have to work would be unhygienic. It would not be a surprise if the servants would catch some disease.
In the letter, Richard Frethorn explains the same scenario where he loses his shipmates and has to face a disease-filled environment that contains scurvy and other diseases. Further, he requests his family to free him in exchange for a sum of money as he is struggling to survive without proper food or shelter. He is fighting a battle to survive the tough conditions and wants some help either in the form of food or freedom.
