Development of the U.S Correctional System
Pennsylvania System
Pennsylvania system is introduced in Pennsylvania and considered to be the system of prison disciplined in the 18th century which is based on the principle of prisoner’s custody in solitary confinement.
Strength
The prisoners can get the protection from the general public
Weakness
It caused the prisoners to have mental health and personality disorders.
The parole and probation standards and the use of prison labor is still found in the modern correction system (Rubin, 2017).
Auburn System
Auburn system was used in the 19th century and worked on the principle of panel method in which the prisoners at night were kept in the solitary confinement with the silence and allowed to work during the day in the form of groups.
Strength
The strength of this system was that it required less cost to construct.
Weakness
The weakness of this system was that less care was provided to the individual needs of the prisoners.
The punishment of the prisoner by whippings on breaking the rule is still a modern correctional system.
War On Drugs
Since 1971, the cost of the war on drugs was estimated to more than one trillion dollars. Due to this war, more than sixty cities are now operating supervised facilities of injection and many syringes sharing programs have been started.
Crime rates have been trended downwards due to these war on drugs. Drug courts have found twenty-six percent less likely to report the cases of substance use. Mass Incarceration play did not find to be much efficient and showed a very negligible effect on the safety of the public.
American Correctional Association
The five principles of American Correctional Association include competence, knowledge, opportunity, protection, and humanity.
The four main characteristics of ideal correction employees are considered to be honesty, proactive attitude, willing to work, utilize the time productively, and proactive attitude.
The characteristics of ideal correction employee help in upholding the values of ACA by ensuring the smooth business operations which can offer higher quality services, goods and greater satisfaction of employee.
