The Worldview in Avatar by James Cameron
The movie Avatar made history when it was released back in 2009. The Director, James Camerons projection of Pantheistic worldview made the movie more interesting. Worldviews help one understand the essence of being a human and teaches how to be considerate towards the world. James Cameron repeatedly said in many interviews that humans tend to consume everything in the way, including nature. Human beings feel that they are invincible due to owning guns and technology, which in their opinion makes them entitled to have everything in this world. He repeatedly suggests that we need to change our ways before it is too late.
Avatar shows that it is 2154, humans have consumed their planet and now are eyeing the Planet Pandora for its resources. Jake Sully, an injured marine, is assigned the task to mesh with the aliens on the planet, by putting his consciousness in an Avatar body. His goal is to win the hearts of the people of Pandora and convince them to relocate. The people of Pandora are called Navi. The planet sits on a large amount of unobtanium. If Sully can successfully convince the Navi people to relocate, no war will be required to remove them. However, Sullys loyalty starts to change when he meets a Navi female Neytiri. She saves his life and teaches him the ways of the Navi people.
The concept of Pantheism is evident throughout the movie. The Navi have a spiritual connection with their entire world, inclusive of animals and plants. A large tree is what they call home, which signifies Mother Nature. The Navi people are so intertwined with nature that they pray, and on certain occasions cry every time they kill an animal for eating purposes. The viewers can feel the true essence of pantheism through Neytiri and the way she mentors Sully. She teaches Sully that there is pantheistic enlightenment to everything that the Navi do. The food they eat, their prayers, the way they are devoted to their planet and how they relate with one another, all has a pantheistic explanation. Pantheistic worldview does not just lay in the background it discourses to the audience through every scene and character relations in the movie. For example when Grace Augustine died in the movie, Moat professed that she is with Eywa now. She became a part of the large tree.
While Pantheism is dominant in the movie, Naturalistic worldview is portrayed too. Augustines character is the naturalist in the film. She is trying to find the natural explanation of Navi behavior. It is seen in the movie that Navi have to connect their hair with animals to hear their ancestors. The same way, the connection is shown throughout the movie the cords that connect all the plants underneath. The spirituality is evident, but the element of connection gives substance to Augustines thoughts.
