Interpersonal communication in workplace
Introduction
The goal of this essay is to discuss interpersonal communication in the workplace, especially the use of ethical communication in the workplace in order to maintain ethics and workplace diversity. The various sorts of employees with a variety of modes, values, and platforms will be addressed through extra-dimensional communication model. Interpersonal communication in the workplace will be enhanced by improving people skills and social skills. The essay will describe how personal skill can be used for effective interpersonal communication in the workplace. The communication event can be further explained by comparing with the organizational values, group communication, double –loop learning, personal biases and can also be explained based on cultural competence in practice.
Interpersonal communication is a skill that encompasses how an individual is going to communicate with another individual. The scope of this essay is that it discusses the interpersonal communication in a workplace and this assessment demonstrate the ethical communication issues faced in the workplace that create workplace dilemma. The essay analyses that group decision makings can be shaped by interpersonal communication and workplace ethics and diversity could also be maintained by sustaining goo and professional interpersonal communication. Thus workplace ethical dilemma can be minimized and group decisions could be taken easily.
The communication event which describes interpersonal communication needs to focus on the different types of personality in the workplace and the ethical issues related to interpersonal communication can be decreased by understanding the personality types as discussed by McIntosh, Lucked, & Davis (2008) in the book “interpersonal communication skills in the workplace.” Personality types include intrinsic and extrinsic persons. The workplace interpersonal communication can be maintained by understanding the personality of the person you are talking to. If the person is intrinsic then you need to avoid lengthy discussions. The person needs to be extra careful while communicating with a senior manager or the head of the organization (McIntosh et al., 2008).
The ethical dilemma that I experienced in the workplace used to happen because we were not taking care of the cultural values and belief system of the other individuals while debating in a group. Our conversations were lacking any logical reasoning and facts thus ended up creating ethical issues in the workplace.
However, interpersonal communication in a workplace could also be improved by applying the Russian Doll Analogy of Kaye (2013) which describes the aspects of interpersonal communication which are an interpersonal relationship, self-management, competence and people in the system. These four aspects of Kaye’s strategies can be applied in the workplace communication experience. The workplace communication issues that I find out are that some of the employs lack skills to present issues and some were unable to talk openly while communicating. I went through issue because I had not good understanding with the employees and I think that by working on interpersonal skills will help all the employees to present their issues and to discuss their concern openly. I find it very alarming that I was not confident enough to discuss marketing strategies with other employees and I improved it by self-management and by understanding the people in the system.
I was personally biased with some colleagues and was not familiar with the other. My behavior was a barrier to my ay when I was participating in group projects. I tried to understand each and other in the workplace and I was eventually no more biased towards particular employees. I was able to develop a good environment in the workplace and my behavior was in parallel with the organizational value and thus I helped to endorsee diversity in the workplace.
I also find out that I lack skill competencies that are the incompetency of professional communication and decision making in a group and I felt very embarrassed about identifying this as a mistake. But the Double-loop model of Christopher Argyris gave me the strategy to learn from errors and to improve the learning that goes beyond the identification of errors. The model suggests correcting mental model which underline the pattern of thinking’s and to control the actions that end in making errors (Richardson, 2014).
I applied the model of double-loop and noticed the gap where I want to go and where I stand. I had built many dependencies in the workplace and I was, therefore, unable to communicate with the general group and I need to change my mental model intruder to improve interpersonal communication in the workplace.
However, I developed a strong internal locus of control by focusing on my errors which I used to conduct while having a conversation in a group. I worked on my social skills and now I am able to control what employee needs to be communicated in which way. I am confident enough to communicate in front of a group of people because I have built mutual understanding with the group members which motivates me to communicate without error.
I have changed my mental model and I communicate with people with the way I want them to communicate with me. This helped me to understeer the cultural relativism of the diversified workplace and am able to understand others opinion as well. I am also working on the professional code of ethics for communication in a workplace so that I WILL be able to maintain work ethics and diversity. The code of ethics that are being followed says that interpersonal communication should be based on mutual understanding, legal facts and should not be sensitive to any belief or cultural value. It further says that the body of language should be improved with the help of knowledge and research (Fitzpatrick & Seib, 1995).
I focused on communication management and developed a set of strategies for professional conversation in a group or with another employee. I will be using factual information while discussing a phenomenon with the colleagues and I am taking good care of the fact that I will deliver information with references. Am very much concern that communication in groups should not violate the values of the organization, should not be against someone's belief and culture and someone would not be offended base on the conversation.
Conclusion
This paper has demonstrated interpersonal communication issued faced by other colleagues in the workplace and me. The incident was explained by taking help from the ethical code of communication, by taking help from Russian doll analogy of Kaye(2013), by applying double –loop strategy, and by examining my social and personal skills. The ideas presented about personal development made me cope with the communicational challenges that I faced in the workplace and helped me to the ability to take group based decision makings.
I developed a strategy to work on my errors and to think beyond them. The code of ethics helped me to understand the narrative of the person that I am talking to. This helped to develop an ethical environment and it also helped to endorse workplace diversity. I will be able to maintain good Interpersonal communication in the workplace and this hopefully encourage diversity in the workplace. I have gained an in-depth understanding of professional communication and I will be able to deliver this knowledge to my other colleges so that they will also be involved in professional conversations. A professional habit of conversation in a group or between two employees will help to maintain the trust and accuracy in information. It will also help to improve interpersonal understand and will help to develop a pleasant work environment.
