Myths are part of Greek culture that were created for teaching society about something meaningful and important. They sometimes teach people about events such as natural calamities based on the belief that God has the power of punishing people. According to Greek myths Gods and goddesses integrative with everyday lives of humans. Stories create legends that attempts to give lesson to the people. There are many Greek legends such as Olympus, Zeus and Apollo all focus on comparing good and evil.
Odysseus is a portrayed as leader, becoming apparent in his journey of struggles and pain. He was a kind and possessed qualities of an extraordinary man. His leadership traits differentiated him from others. He always guided his crew members and took the courage to enter the land of dangers. A true leader has a role in making decisions effectively during critical situations while Odysseus fails at many points exhibiting his weakened state. Joyce highlights the leadership traits of Odysseus that presents his heroic role. Joyce linked the character of Bloom with this Greek leader by showing his good qualities. Although both characters had some flaws according to Borge that are neglected by Joyce. The thoughtfulness and extraordinary qualities of Bloom are adequate for shoring his heroic role. Both these figures has worked to overcome their conflicting desires for acting according to the orders of Greek gods.
The legends act according to the will of Greek gods for transmitting old beliefs. The purpose of Greek myths is to encourage people in everyday life to accept the authority of their creators. These myths also acts to restrict them from evilness such as greed, lies, hurting others and lust. By considering the concept of punishment as endured by many Greek heroes for proving their loyalty to their creator.
