Impact of Distance on Project Teams
It is a common trend to find team members working on the same project while in different parts of a country due to factors such as outsourcing. With distance arises the challenges of communication and cohesion because, for the smooth running of a project, team members must be in constant communication. Furthermore, distance means that team members are isolated and have no support from their colleagues when making important decisions that may need consultation. Transfer of knowledge and skills is also a challenge when project team members are not co-located. However, having a single information system that harmonizes company processes and keeps everyone up to date, communication and cohesion within the team improves and the challenges that arise from distance can be addressed on a single platform. Furthermore, holding conferences that bring members together and give them a chance to share knowledge enhances the team spirit and builds cohesion between them.
Global project teams are on the rise today because of globalization where companies are outsourcing labor and opening branches globally. As opposed to the teams in different locations in a country, global teams are likely to experience bigger hurdles including language barriers, political instability, cultural differences, and information relay issues due to the varying technological levels (Informations Systems Project Management 101). To overcome these challenges, companies are hiring multilingual personnel who can easily overcome the language barrier. Secondly, companies are now aligning their policies and beliefs with the cultures of the foreign nations, to avoid rejection and ensure an easy time for their employees in these foreign nations (Informations Systems Project Management 106). Lastly, companies are more inclined to hire people that are flexible and willing to work from any location and maintain these individuals in times of location shifts.
