Servant-leadership model inspires me because it focuses on serving the people. Right from childhood, I wanted to utilize my capabilities for the welfare of humans. In this regard, I chose Loaves and Fishes Ministry which a non-profit organization. In the organization, I was given the post of team leader. I was responsible for managing a team of five people. After joining the organization, I had the feeling that I joined the right platform. In this context, my major responsibility was to organize and assist with fundraisers. This was my opportunity to contribute to this noble cause of helping people. The organization is doing a tremendous job as it is supporting families and individuals in need. The company provides needy people with groceries. In this respect, nearly 250 families and individuals are served on a monthly basis. Also, the organization feeds hungry on every Tuesday, and they provide 700 lunches monthly.
In the country, many people need clothing Loaves and Fishes Ministry provides 150 kids and adults with clothing. In addition, laundry and shower facilities are also being offered to about a hundred people every month. Almost twenty-five hygiene kits are distributed every month. The company also assists individuals regarding essential documents such as birth certificates, and other IDs. Emergency prescription help is also available for people on a monthly basis. For all these remarkable services, funds are required, and when I joined the organization, I was committed and determined that I will give my best so that maximum funds can be collected to serve the people in need. In the servant-leadership model, leaders value effective communication and decision making (Sendjaya Sarros, 2002). In this context, I developed a good relationship with my team members I conveyed to them that they can contact me anytime and discuss anything. I gave them confidence so that they could work whole-heartedly for the noble cause. I held regular sessions with them collectively and on an individual basis.
Servant-Leadership model requires a leader to be a good listener (Greenleaf, 2002), which is why I always paid close attention to what my team members said. I motivated them and assured them of full cooperation. I have studied the servant-leadership model in detail, and I know that team members need motivation and encouragement to perform well. In the meetings, I made it clear that we have to cater the needs of almost 250 families and individuals, and for this purpose, a lot of hard work is required we need to create awareness among people to donate generously for this mission. I was feeling the pain of helpless families and individuals. I requested my friends and family members to contribute to the mission. I got a good amount as a donation from the people in my surroundings.
Moreover, my team was already working hard, and they saw my enthusiasm and willingness, that is why they also asked their relatives and friends to donate for the welfare of poor and needy families. As a result, they also received a handsome amount. Now, we want to let more people know so that they can empathize. We worked according to the set plans. We have marked all the areas. The special meetings were arranged with the corporate officials, and many of them expressed willingness to donate funds for poor people. In order to have more donation, we wanted to knock every single door. I visited different shopping centers and malls and explained our objective. Although several people did not pay attention to what we said, we did not take anything personally as we kept moving on. Until half of the month, we have received a sufficient amount of funds, yet we were a little away from achieving the target.
Also, we launched a door to door campaign so that more people can become part of the mission. Initially, when my team faced difficulties about the collection of funds, I gave them confidence and said we should remove all the negativity from our hearts and minds and need to focus on raising more funds. Therefore, we all had a self-belief that by the end of the month we would raise funds that would serve the purpose for more than 250 families and individuals. We managed to convince hundreds of people to donate for the betterment of society as we do not want anyone without the necessities such as food and groceries. Due to teamwork, dedication, and effective strategies that I implemented by keeping in view the servant-leadership model, we succeeded to achieve our target, and by the end of the month, we managed to raise funds that were sufficient to provide 250 families and individuals with groceries and food items. Once the target was achieved, I congratulated my team and appreciated their efforts.
It was a great experience to volunteer for Loaves and Fishes. I thoroughly enjoyed working for the welfare of poor people. In order to guide my team, I followed the principles of servant-leadership such as Empathy, good listening, motivating and encouraging the team, and creating awareness. The model proves to be effective in building consensus among groups (Waterman, 2011). The study of this model enabled me to look at the problem realistically. I was able to develop a foresight to achieve the target. Throughout the month, I advised my team to remain calm and composed, and they responded very well by showing great commitment to their work.
