Part B
My aunt is a nurse and few months backs she met with a recruiter for her job. she was told that many of the requests are present from a fresh college graduate. In fact, she applied for one other hospital in the same town but a fresh candidate was preferred over her. This reflects the practice of ageing bias in our professions especially in nursing. I talked to her and some of my other colleagues who joined med school and nursing training centers about this issue and found out that there are many false assumptions and beliefs about older nurses in the profession. One main point that I came across many times is the assumption of some of the younger nurses that older nurses are unaware and out of touch of advance requirements including procedures, treatments and medications. As a consequence, some younger doctors and nurses do not pay adequate respect to them and treat them with little regard to their life-saving skills and years of experience.
I believe that this is a very wrong approach and they must be taught the importance of experience in professional life as older nurses have accumulated many years of valuable experience, for example 21 years in case of my aunt. By dint of this experience and awareness of hospital mechanisms and work ethic, they are very suitable to learn new technology and its use in the profession. Another misconception that I heard from some of my old colleagues who are associated with medical studies and nursing that old nurses are too fragile and frail to fulfil the physical requirements of treading and handling patients. But this is not true because in modern techniques and learning of nursing, paramedical and nursing staff are prohibited to do any kind of strenuous activity or lifting patient for assistance. The prohibitions are applied to ensure implementation of safety regulations (Addressing Ageism in Nursing 2017). One important factor that authorities and administrations must consider is the experience of older nurses in case information. Over the course of their duty, experience and professional life, they may have come across hundreds of cases on which they might have worked or saw them being resolved by the medical body of a hospital. So it is the duty of authorities and hiring faculties to ensure eradication of such tendencies and policies in nursing.
Part C
Education can help to address ageism because the knowledge gap on ageism is one of the main factors which contributes to the prevalence of this phenomenon. According to different studies, another important factor that can be targeted towards aging bias is a positive experience with older people. I combine these two factors to develop a community education plan to address this issue. this is because intergenerational and education contact tends to exist ADDIN EN.CITE EndNoteCiteAuthorAyalon/AuthorYear2017/YearRecNum1426/RecNumDisplayText(Ayalon amp Tesch-Rmer, 2017)/DisplayTextrecordrec-number1426/rec-numberforeign-keyskey appEN db-idaxzrwpxxqvwtw5evsf3xrer2arfwsa5f0e5d timestamp15800654791426/key/foreign-keysref-type nameGeneric13/ref-typecontributorsauthorsauthorAyalon, Liat/authorauthorTesch-Rmer, Clemens/author/authors/contributorstitlestitleTaking a closer look at ageism Self-and other-directed ageist attitudes and discrimination/title/titlesdatesyear2017/year/datespublisherSpringer/publisherisbn1613-9372/isbnurls/urls/record/Cite/EndNote(Ayalon Tesch-Rmer, 2017). other important factors underpinning this community education plan are shown in different studies.in one study it is reported that the knowledge gap in ageism is more prominent among nurses as compared to other health care professionals ADDIN EN.CITE EndNoteCiteAuthorLevy/AuthorYear2016/YearRecNum1429/RecNumDisplayText(Levy amp Macdonald, 2016)/DisplayTextrecordrec-number1429/rec-numberforeign-keyskey appEN db-idaxzrwpxxqvwtw5evsf3xrer2arfwsa5f0e5d timestamp15800657011429/key/foreign-keysref-type nameJournal Article17/ref-typecontributorsauthorsauthorLevy, Sheri R/authorauthorMacdonald, Jamie L/author/authors/contributorstitlestitleProgress on understanding ageism/titlesecondary-titleJournal of Social Issues/secondary-title/titlesperiodicalfull-titleJournal of Social Issues/full-title/periodicalpages5-25/pagesvolume72/volumenumber1/numberdatesyear2016/year/datesisbn0022-4537/isbnurls/urls/record/Cite/EndNote(Levy Macdonald, 2016). Another study shows that ageism permeates the health care providers attitude, health care system structure and mindset of older patients. The main objective of this plan includes eliminating the discrimination among older people and to dismiss the anxiety and stereotyping towards ageism.
Education Plan for Older People
It is very important that the initiatives of this plan involve an older adult in creating awareness among the community to dispel aging bias. Aging shapes older peoples self-perception and also affect how they perceive themselves and other people ADDIN EN.CITE EndNoteCiteAuthorSugar/AuthorYear2017/YearRecNum1428/RecNumDisplayText(Sugar, Haslem, Skaar, Brancamp, amp Harris, 2017)/DisplayTextrecordrec-number1428/rec-numberforeign-keyskey appEN db-idaxzrwpxxqvwtw5evsf3xrer2arfwsa5f0e5d timestamp15800656201428/key/foreign-keysref-type nameJournal Article17/ref-typecontributorsauthorsauthorSugar, JA/authorauthorHaslem, H/authorauthorSkaar, T/authorauthorBrancamp, T/authorauthorHarris, SG/author/authors/contributorstitlestitleReducing Ageism Through Intergenerational Service Learning/titlesecondary-titleInnovation in Aging/secondary-title/titlesperiodicalfull-titleInnovation in Aging/full-title/periodicalpages826-826/pagesdatesyear2017/year/datesurls/urls/record/Cite/EndNote(Sugar, Haslem, Skaar, Brancamp, Harris, 2017). Proper education that targets older people can improve participation and self-perception in community education to address this issue.
Education Program for Adolescents and Children
A community education program to educate children and adults on ageism and older people is very important ADDIN EN.CITE EndNoteCiteAuthorKing/AuthorYear2017/YearRecNum1430/RecNumDisplayText(King amp Bryant, 2017)/DisplayTextrecordrec-number1430/rec-numberforeign-keyskey appEN db-idaxzrwpxxqvwtw5evsf3xrer2arfwsa5f0e5d timestamp15800657601430/key/foreign-keysref-type nameJournal Article17/ref-typecontributorsauthorsauthorKing, Scott P/authorauthorBryant, Fred B/author/authors/contributorstitlestitleThe Workplace Intergenerational Climate Scale (WICS) A self report instrument measuring ageism in the workplace/titlesecondary-titleJournal of Organizational behavior/secondary-title/titlesperiodicalfull-titleJournal of Organizational behavior/full-title/periodicalpages124-151/pagesvolume38/volumenumber1/numberdatesyear2017/year/datesisbn0894-3796/isbnurls/urls/record/Cite/EndNote(King Bryant, 2017). These programs should consist of a progressive approach to ensure the education continuation and older peoples role model to spread education about ageism.
Community Education Program for The Health Care Professional
Healthcare institutes should include different programs to educate providers on older people and aging. Nurses should be provided with education regarding ageism and how to deal with ageism bias in nursing practice.
