Salvation Christian Tradition
Origen was born in 184 AD and died on 253 AD. His father was a devout Christian and a respected literature professor and belongs to a wealthy family his mother belongs to a lower-class family. His father taught him literature and philosophy. When he was not fully seventeen, his father was arrested for being practicing Christianity openly. Later on, his father was martyred. When he turned eighteen he was appointed as a catechist at the Catechetical school of Alexandria. He was a teetotaler and vegetarian and led a simple life. He was a prolific writer and wrote almost 2000 treasuries. His major work on textual criticism was Hexapla.
In his first writings, he claimed that Jesus Christ was the firstborn of all the creation and had a human soul. He also considered Jesus as a perfect soul that is closest to God and is faithful to him. He claimed Jesus as both human and divine. He also proposed a theory known as the “ransom theory of atonement” in which he stated that in exchange for human liberation Satan was given a ransom in the form of Jesus death on the cross. Later he explained that Jesus' death was a trick that God did with Satan as Jesus was sin-free and the incarnate.
According to Origen's theoretical framework, God is the ultimate power and no human is powerful enough to defeat him. He believed that everything comes from and will return to only one source (God). He claimed that all the good people will be sent to heaven and God will turn sinners around and make their hearts pure again. Due to this theory, many questions were raised that if everything comes from good and will return to good then why there is a difference between every human. Also, why some have to live on other's expenses. Origen's response to these questions was that every rational creature possesses free will yet people use it poorly. He further responded that every person is responsible for his or her bad situations as these situations are caused due to the improper use of free will.
