A Tale Of Two Validities
The purpose of the study conducted by Ciarocco, Lewandowski, and Van Volkom (2013) titled as “” is to evaluate and analyze the impact of the multifaceted approach that can be used for teaching the research methods and its further impact on the attitude of the students. The study emphasized on evaluating the multifaceted approach in reference to the five different experiment designs that are used in a specific research methodology course. The attitude of the students was also evaluated in response to this methodology. This evaluation was conducted to identify the most appropriate and befitting way of making research works easier for the students in the subjects for which the students often have a negative or dislike-ful attitude.
In order to assess the reliability and strength of the study, it is important to analyze the internal and external validity of the study. The internal validity is related to the research design, structure and variables used. In this study, seventy students participate that were enrolled in one of the experimental research methods courses. These participants were evaluated before and after the instructional changes were implemented. However, there is no control group and the participants all belong to one course only with no possibility of evaluating how different types of students (students with learning disabilities, disable students, etc.) may affect their attitudes and adoption of the multifaceted approach. This weakens the internal validity of the study.
The same structure of the study also weakness the external validity of the study. This is because the results of the study cannot be universalized i.e. they cannot be considered valid for students belonging to different courses with different research methods, may have certain learning deficiency, etc. Under such circumstances, the researchers failed to include a sufficient and appropriate sample that could produce a universalized result and conclusion. Therefore, the study has a weak external validity.
