I have worked on the team with my class fellows to conduct some class projects. The Tuckman’s Stages can be applied as follows

Forming

In this stage, we met with our team members. We wrote down what sort of achievements are expected of us. The team leader narrated the mission of the team. The members were allotted certain roles to be performed by them. The rules were also set for what to do and what not to. It was also communicated how the decisions will be taken by the team.

Storming

A detailed discussion was held between the team members. In this discussion, the confusions related to the roles of each member were discussed and cleared. The team leader in this part initiated the discussion and then let the members continue. The leader ensured that the members know that each member is important.

Norming

In this stage all the team members accepted their roles and duties. The defined rules were accepted and the team started to work on a positive track. The leader supported us all through this stage and we share and celebrated small successes with each other.

Performing

In this stage we performed the acts that helped the team as a whole. We handled the conflicts in a positive manner that helped to improve the performance of the team. The leader played a vital role in the communication process within the team.

Problems in working with virtual teams

The team may lack effective communication provided the members may be far away from each other. The team members may not be available to work especially if they come from different time zones. The level of commitment on the part of the members may be low. This would mean that the virtual teams can be broken at any time. This can be overcome by signing some contract by the team members.
