Introduction
Our world is full of various sorts of companies that operate in different markets. These companies or organizations have their own specializations and provide their customers with different sorts of products and services. Some companies or organizations produce small daily use products, whereas some operate in the production of large products. There is another criterion for the classification of the organizations working in the market. Some companies are B to B (or B2B) companies and some are B to C (B2C) companies. B2C companies are the companies that produce and provide product directly to the end consumer whereas, B2B companies refer to those companies that produce and provide companies indirectly to the end consumer (Oke, 2007). They make the product which works as the raw material for some another industry. That company or industry uses that product in the production of some other product that is consumed by the end consumer.
There are many companies that act as B2B companies working in the United States of America as well, which provide their finished products to different industries for further manufacturing. Many of them are operating in Kansas, especially in Wichita. One of the prominent companies among them is Spirit AeroSystems Pvt Ltd. Spirit AeroSystems Pvt Ltd is the largest manufacturer of the first-tier of the aerostructures, It is involved in the manufacturing of some of the major parts of the aircrafts, including Boeing. These parts include fuselage of Boeing 737, cockpit section of fuselage (also known as “Section 41” of Boeing) and various portions of the Boeing 787 fuselage. The aerostructure manufacturer is also involved in the manufacture of various fuselage sections and front wing spars of the Airbus A350. But Spirit Aerosystems is not the only air structure manufacturer present in the market. The prominent aerospace companies operating in the market which are a threat and competition for Spirit Aerosystems are Triumph Aerostructures - Vought Aircraft Division, UTC Aerospace Systems, Leonardo, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries.
Discussion
Operations performed at Spirit AeroSystems
Spirit AeroSystems performs the functions of AeroSystems Engineering. It recruits AeroSystems Engineers from all over the United States of America, in fact all over the world, to perform its functions and maintain its operations running. Aerospace Engineering, which is the core area of Spirit Aero Systems, is a very broad field (Shanyi, 2007). It includes basically three following major sub sets: 1. Aerodynamics and Propulsion2. Structures 3. Controls and dynamicsNow, these can be divided into many more subsets.
1. Aerodynamicist: They work with anything that includes air, be it car, fan, kite, or a plane. Even your vacuum cleaners. They are one who streamlines your vehicle to give optimum efficiency, reducing drag in short. There are Aeroacoustics people also who work with aerodynamicist to reduce noise pollution.
2. Propulsion: as the name suggest, they are responsibly for moving things. Jet engines, Space Propulsion, Fan design etc. Nothing can fly or move without a propulsion guy. They calculate amount of fuel and consumption according to the size. They are ones who makes a plane go fast or slow.
3. Controls and dynamics: They are responsible for making sure everything is well connect and all the systems talk to each other. Example: When the pilot leaves the cockpit, the autopilot which flies the planes is designed by these guys. Flap deflection, moving and turning the aircraft. It is very complicated and important. Also, the space counter part do the same thing but in space. They control the satellites.
4. Structure: They are responsible for physical structure of the aircraft or the spacecraft. They do stress analysis, design and overall modelling. They work with all other teams, aerodynamics, propulsion and controls to fit everything together.
Departments at Spirit Aero Systems
Yes, every airline or aerospace company has departments. They would roughly be:
Finance
Revenue Management
Marketing and Distribution
Accounting
IT
Operations (including maintenance and flight operations)
What are some of the best aspects of working for Spirit Aerospace is that the employees get to meet new people every day. Some of those people become frequent flyers and are happy to see you there. Also, you get to travel for free to anywhere that spirit flies but also you get to travel on other airlines for really small cost. The company gives its employees great benefits in terms of compensation and various other facilities so that the employees can be retained for a longer period of time and they stay loyal to the company.
Culture at Spirit AeroSystems
Numerous things can be sighted that are very positive in this organization and there are a number of things that many employees would like to see changed in the air parts manufacturer.
In the very first place, the company provides great health insurance plans. The employee-only coverage premiums and max out of pocket per year is less than 2k. That is unheard of, a value cannot be placed on access to healthcare. Medical costs can be catastrophic, beyond grateful for the coverage. Travel for the employee, spouse parents, and children up to age 25 are unlimited on Spirit domestically, international taxes and fees apply.
Spirit Aerosystems has diverse interline agreements with other airlines. Fees vary as does access based on the classification of the travel dependent. For instance a spouse can travel on more airlines than a person listed as a travel companion (Hendra, et. al, 2007). This is common across the board at all airlines. In addition to this, flexibility in schedule based on departments (Pilots and Flight Attendants) affords time off without having to use vacation. When staffing permits days times routes etc can be changed.
The employees are really happy while working at Spirit AeroSystems and enjoy the facilities being provided to them by the air parts manufacturer and supplier.
The leadership at the company is also very pleased knowing that their business model enables people who otherwise would not be able to attend a grandchild’s birth, their child’s wedding and sometimes we have to bring people to say their goodbyes. The company now provides its employees with an official “Honor Flight” airline bringing veterans to DC to see the memorials and Arlington. These are the things that make a Spirit employee proud.
Jobs at Spirit AeroSystems
Depends on what job you are looking for. If it’s management, then they typically take anyone who has a degree in business management or years of experience. If you are a shop floor “normie”, they don’t care, but most who do have degrees are from WSU, there are higher chances that you’ll get selected at the airplane parts manufacturer.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, it can be seen that that Spirit AeroSystsmes is performing a great job in the market by providing top-notch products to its consumers that are various airline companies. The air structure manufacturing company produces top end products which are why it is a trusted name by the aircraft producers and is being constantly ranked at the top among the first-tier manufacturers of the air structures. Apart from providing top-level services and products to its clients, the Spirit AeroSystems also provides its employees with various perks and benefits so that they can be retained for a longer period of time.
