Response to Question 1
Kelly’s position in Japan is one significant example of various clashes in the forms of the difference in culture, customs, and expectations. The comprehensive understanding of the entire case indicates that the difference in culture between Japan and the Western world eventually created many problems for Kelly and her family. The scenario of a new country for Kelly is one significant example of improper management of expatriation. The unprepared international business perspective makes it critical for Kelly to successfully align with the culture and customs of Japan as the host country. Clashes of the new culture turned as a shock to Kelly, her family, and her coworkers in Japan. Experiencing an entirely different cultural environment was one of the most unexpected aspects of Kelly and her family. They observed the difference mainly in the forms of the smaller apartment and a business atmosphere. The difference in customs was another clash that occurred in the case of Kelly. It is observed that Japanese people prefer to remain at some form of distance from others. Kelly had to consider the difference of customs to adopt the approach of reservation for others. The difference of language was another cultural clash that appeared in the case of Kelly’s business assignment in Japan.
Response to Question 2
Identification of different stages of culture shock is important to determine the actual perspective of the difference of culture in Kelly’s case. Generally, four stages of culture shock identified as honeymoon, frustration, adjustment, and adaptation (Dörrenbächer & Geppert, 2017). Kelly and her entire family experienced a great form of culture shock by dealing with differences in customs and values. First and second stages of cultural shock were experienced by Kelly and her family in the case of Kelly’s position in Japan. The first stage of cultural shock is a honeymoon which appeared in the case when Kelly and her husband were excited to discover the new culture of Japan. It is observed in the earlier stages of their arrival in Japan, when the entire family of Kelly had positive thoughts about the new culture. This specific perspective remained for about two weeks. The second stage of culture shock in the form of frustration was also greatly experienced by Kelly and her family. It was not easy for the entire family to successfully deal with living changes. Kelly suffered from the stage of frustration during her work in a new environment. The entire family needed to understand and use the Japanese language as a major cultural difference.
Response to Question 3
Identification of different problems of culture shock for Kelly makes it essential to critically analyze the entire perspective of decision-making. It is important to justify how sending Kelly as a business representative in Japan was a good decision by the higher management. The decision by Kelly’s boss needs to be evaluated to make better inferences about the issue of cultural differences for Kelly. It is observed that the boss of Kelly offered her international position in Japan, hence she never had any precise knowledge about this region. Kelly’s appointment in Japan was established as the opportunity to achieve the ultimate objectives of internal business. The factor of the difference in culture for Kelly’s family was completely ignored by the jury members during the entire procedure of decision-making.
Response to Question 4
It is interesting to consider the practical approach of the cultural difference for Kelly. It is vital to examine what should Kelly have done to successfully deal with the issue of cultural shock. At first, Kelly needed to attain better knowledge about the specific culture of the host country. This form of assessment can be helpful to determine the actual aspects of culture shock (Asgary & Samii, 2015). It turned as an important approach for Kelly to successfully explain her cultural challenges to the boss. Raising the argument can be helpful for Kelly to reduce the cultural gap that exists in the case of the host country of Japan.
